With a small ajustment to the config file Quake 3 runs flawlessly.

In the baseq3 directory edit the file q3config.cfg
Change from:
seta r_mode "3"
seta r_fullscreen "1"
seta r_customwidth "600"
seta r_customheight "480"
To:
seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_fullscreen "1"
seta r_customwidth "800"
seta r_customheight "480"
