At the beginning of the week Ubuntu announced that it will be demonstrating a reworked desktop version of Ubuntu built specifically for a new category of portable notebooks. These affordable UMPC’s are expanding and evolving for the best.

Ryan Paul from Ars Technica did some hands on testing with the latest test build and expressed his thoughts on the current state.
With further development it’s looking to be a great addition to the Ubuntu range.

Is there a release date for this or is it only available preloaded on the portable notebooks?

Should be released sometime in July according to information at their website. You can give it a test now with the current build if you are running Ubuntu - https://launchpad.net/netbook-remix
