Here’s the weekly rundown of items that we posted to the middle column on UMPCPortal, our ‘Other News’ section. It’s all good UMPC and MID-related stuff that, in most cases, we didn’t write about as a main news item.

Engadget has a quick hands-on video with a Vega prototype

Weekly Roundup

vega We mentioned the supposedly Android and Nvidia Tegra powered ‘Vega’ tablet a few weeks ago, and now it looks like Engadget has gotten their hands on a prototype. Jump over to their story to see the video.

The thing that will probably jump out to any of us is that the prototype is running Windows CE at the moment. It’s possible that this is just temporary while they build and fine tune the Android software that will be purportedly powering the device at launch, but I’m just hoping that they don’t rush the unit out the door with Windows CE and promise Android firmware at a later time. This would put them in some regards on the same unwanted level of the no-name MIDs I wrote about the other day (see the ‘Users as beta testers’ section). I’ve also got to mention that I’m not digging the resistive touchscreen.

At least the Tegra hardware ensures some pretty good performance. A movie playing at 1280×720 is demoed in the video and the device seems to handle it just fine. The ZuneHD might have the same Nvidia Tegra hardware, but it is too small to actually have a screen with an HD resolution, so on the Vega it is nice to see that HD decoding capability put to good use.

Best netbook for games

Weekly Roundup

In an effort to help people find the best netbook to meet their needs I’m starting a series of blog posts based on reader questions about netbooks. I also hope that this series can help existing netbook owners to expand their knowledge and make the most out of their netbooks. I already answer 4 – 5 emails a day helping people choose the right netbook, so I figured this would be a great way to help even more people with the answers I already provide via email. If you have a question about netbooks feel free to contact me and it may be featured on the blog. So without further ado, here is the first reader question:

Reader Question:
What the best netbook for games? – Charles in MI

Answer:
Hello Charles,

The most important thing to look for when you’re trying to find the best netbook for games is to buy one with an Nvidia ION chipset inside. To put it simply, the chipset allows the graphics load to be taken off the slow Intel Atom processor and placed on the Nvidia ION chipset which provides stellar graphics capabilities on a netbook. So what you’re left with are just a few models that have the Nvidia ION chipset inside which makes my choice of the HP Mini 311 the best netbook for games pretty easy:

HP Mini 311 best netbook for games

The HP Mini 311 is $399.99 or $499.99 if you want a Windows 7 Home Premium and has proven time and again that it can deliver a powerful gaming experience. See our past coverage on the HP Mini 311 here. Netbooks have come a long way and I still find it crazy to see a netbook playing Call of Duty 4.

Pick it up with Windows XP for $399.99 here. Windows 7 price options listed below:
