Lenovo IdeaPad S12 ION Review

Weekly Roundup

Pros:

Nvidia ION provides great multimedia experience, Solid build quality, 320 GB hard drive, 3 GB RAM, Veriface login system

Cons:

Price

Amazon.com Widgets

Bottom Line:

The Lenovo Ideapad S12 ION is the most powerful netbook I’ve reviewed this year and if you aren’t on a strict budget you can stop reading this review right now and go buy it (This is the specific model I reviewed). The 320 GB hard drive, 3 GB’s RAM and Nvidia ION inside provide the perfect netbook experience for someone looking beyond simple office work and internet browsing as demonstrated here. In fact it’s almost easy to forget this is a netbook until you see the Intel Atom processor and – sadly – the price. Lenovo products are almost always made of better quality materials than their competitors so I can cut them a slight break, but I still believe it’s a little overpriced. Yes, the only true legitimate complaint I can share is that the price of this netbook is expensive ($649 for the highest end model I reviewed). Lenovo does offer sales from time to time which I recommend you wait for unless you’re such a big fan of Lenovo that you don’t mind buying it at full price.

Quick Product Specs:

Full Review:

The Lenovo IdeaPad S12 ION is a 12 inch netbook that is much better suited to viewing HD content and playing games than the original Lenovo IdeaPad S12 (Review to be posted soon) thanks in part to it’s Nvidia ION chipset inside. Again, this addition comes at a price. If you don’t need to watch HD content or play some of latest games just buy the Lenovo IdeaPad S12 instead and save a few hundred dollars. But beyond the price which I’ve already beaten to death let’s move onto the appearance and functionality of the netbook.

Design:

The netbook is only 1 inch thick, but with the 6 cell battery it raises the back of the netbook about half an inch. The casing feels like it’s made of high quality materials and when holding the netbook by the corner there is no flex in the body. Yes this is only a 12 inch netbook and not a 15 inch laptop, but even when holding it by the screen it still felt very solid. Something I haven’t always found to be the case with other netbooks I’ve reviewed. The top part of the netbook has a pattern of various sized circles in the design that adds a little more to the design instead of sticking to a flat black. More importantly, it’s difficult to leave an unsightly fingerprint smudge on the top of the netbook case like my old Asus Eee PC 1000HE would do along with some of the other netbooks I’ve seen.

Usability:

The Lenovo IdeaPad S12 features a full sized keyboard which is expected given it’s 12 inch frame. The keys have a nice firm response (I’d say it’s one of the best keyboards I’ve used). The touchpad is also easy to use at 2.5 inches wide and 1.5 inches high. Typing was a breeze as I spent a significant amount of time typing emails and browsing the net for HD content to watch and various PC game demos to try out. I wrote an article and showed some before and after videos of the new Flash utilizing the Nvidia ION chipset as well as a game demo of the PC game Crysis (see the post here). Simply put, watching HD content and playing graphically intense PC games is a gratifying experience on the S12 ION and one that is normally reserved for much more expensive laptops or desktops. The Veriface login system is also back (see my review of it here).

The S12 has 3 USB ports, multi media card slot, headset input, mic input, VGA input and HDMI input. The nice inclusion here is the HDMI port. I’ve seen some netbooks with HDMI ports in the past and despite the fact that they don’t come close to full 1080p resolution, they also rarely have the graphics capabilities to even warrant having an HDMI port in the first place. I tested out the HDMI port on one of my 26 inch Samsung monitors and the image looked pretty good even with the lower resolution (you can only output 1280 x 800).

Benchmarking:

The Lenovo Ideapad S12 scored 1430 on the PCMark05 test which is higher than any other netbooks I’ve tested, but still would not be enough for the highest graphic settings on the most system demanding games. Here are the HD Tune results for the hard drive:

HDtune3_5-results-for-Ideapad-S12

Battery Life:

The Lenovo IdeaPad S12 ION has a 6 cell battery that provides a lower than netbook average battery life at about 4.5 hours under normal usage. This is to be expected though as 12 inch netbooks already tend to trend to towards a lower battery life than their 10 inch brothers. You also have to consider the Nvidia ION chipset which draws down on the battery life as well. I ran battery eater pro under 1280 x 800 32 bit settings with full screen mode on and was able to get 4 hours. Battery Eater Pro isn’t the best way to test batteries as no one will ever be taxing their computer non stop the entire time, but it helps to provide a decent idea. If you need a machine with better battery life and don’t need all of the multimedia capabilities, I suggest you look at the Asus Eee PC 1005HA.

Overall Performance:

Overall, I believe this is the best netbook out on the market right now for people that want something a little larger and more powerful than the familiar 10 inch netbook size. With the ability to handle HD content and many games with ease, this is a true laptop replacement and worthy entry in the budding 12 inch netbook market. What it truly comes down to is whether or not you want to pay the money for a premium netbook that is at least a hundred dollars or more over other similarly equipped netbooks. I believe that the Lenovo IdeaPad S12 is definitely worth looking at (this is the high end model I reviewed), but I suggest you try and find it on sale. If you don’t want to spend that kind of money but still like Lenovo’s 12 inch netbook buy the model without the Nvidia Ion inside.

What the Acer Aspire One Netbook Did to Dell

Weekly Roundup

Just a quick post to mention that thanks to netbooks, Acer has now become the second largest computer maker in the world, after HP, taking Dell’s spot.

Two years ago no one knew what this netbook craze was all about. Today, they say that the trend towards netbook like laptops (laptops that are standard size aka 13-15″ but with netbook features) will ultimately demise these ultra portable computers that we love so much.

Next Generation Acer Aspire One Netbook Now Available for U.S. Customers

Truth of the matter is that netbooks are just getting started. Most computer users do two things with their laptops: check emails and surf the web. Most times all this is done from an Internet browser. Yes, they do listen to music and work on the odd document file but all those tasks can be handled by a netbook without out it going bezerk.

Add the small size and portability factor coupled with the low prices and you have a winning combination.

If you’re still sitting on the fence, go ahead and buy your netbook. It’s no fad. Happy shopping!

Windows 7 at Long Last! But Are Netbook Users Being Left in the Cold?

Weekly Roundup

Windows 7 is out. What about netbooks?

At long last the long awaited Windows 7 operating system has been unleashed. People all over the US have spent the night at retail stores waiting to be the first ones to snap up their copies. If you’re a netbook user, you way be wondering:
Is Windows 7 Netbook Friendly?
Yes it seems to be so far. Microsoft is not blind to the success of netbooks and knows that netbook users now account for a large number of computer users. The only problem though is that without a DVD drive, most netbooks will have trouble loading the new operating system.
Is this a trick from Microsoft to let netbook users out in the cold?
Nah…
You can apparently get Windows 7 via straight Internet download. At the time, I read about this, the link seemed down but keep checking it out and let us know how it turns out for you.
Who has Windows 7 for netbooks already working? How does it fare? Would you recommend it? Is the difference between XP and 7 like night and day? Come on, spill the beans already!

Archos 9 Tablet (Retail) Unboxing and Overview Video.

Weekly Roundup

Thanks very much to Mobilx.eu who have sent one of their first Archos 9 devices to us for a week of testing and hands-on. You’ll remember hearing about this earlier in the year and getting a launch at IDF in September but it’s taken a long time to reach the hands of end-users. There are a few early devices out there already but not many hands-on and unboxing videos. Here’s my contribution.

Live Review was recorded and is available here.

I’ve been testing a lot since doing the video and haven’t seen anything that has changed much from my last testing session with it. Battery life is a very sold 3hrs (wifi on, screen 50%), the Windows 7 build is ‘Starter Edition’ it comes with a 60GB hard drive, 1GB RAM and the 1.1Ghz Intel Atom processor.

I will be preparing the device for a full hands-on demo and Q&A for tomorrow’s live session. Hope to see you there.

Asus Eee PC Usage Survey

Weekly Roundup

What makes you want an Eee PC? What do you want to see be included in your next Eee PC purchase? What is on your wishlist? Well, Asus want to know and are running a survey to find out the answers to those questions.

Some standard questions are asked, and other specific ones such as how did you find your Eee PC,  what series do you use, what do you consider the most important feature when shopping for an Eee PC, what is your main reason for having one, what do you intend to use it for and much more.

It really does seem like one can almost “order” the so called perfect Eee PC if enough responses come through with particular features, so give it a go and see what you think. Let them know what great feature you wouldn’t mind upgrading for and you might just get it.

You can also offer feedback on what is already available and how you would like to see particular aspects improved as well as being asked which aspect are you the most unhappy with.

A commendable effort on behalf of Asus. So see what the survey is like and let them know exactly what you think your perfect Eee PC is.

The Eee PC T91MT with new pSSD drive

Weekly Roundup

t91mtAsus have revealed that their new Eee PC T91MT multi-touch netbook will feature the 32GB pSSD Gen2 drive from SanDisk. Asus chose this model from SanDisk’s offerings as it suits the netbooks low power needs and small form factor requirements.

As many readers would already be aware, this means enhanced durability for the T91MT because the SSD drive brings with it near 0% chance of mechanical failure as it contains no moving parts, is much quieter than other hard drives and uses far less power as well. It would also give a much, much less chance of data loss due to failure of the drive.

The Eee PC T91MT comes bundled with Windows 7 Home Premium and supports touch gestures such as rotating, pinching and swiping, let alone the fact that it can also be used as a tablet PC.

It also provides a 8.9 inch screen, weighs less than 1Kg and is of a very compact size. The Eee PC T91MT is quickly proving to be a very interesting and anticipated release.

It is currently available from Amazon in black for $532.
